For my birthday this year my gorgeous friend…best known as miss drinks-tea-like-most-drink-water bought us a ‘keepin it simple cupcake class’ course at Kustom Cupcakes. I was delighted to say the least! So off we went to our cooking class. Having never been to Kustom Cupcakes it was a totally new experience for me. A lovely little shop with an impressive looking coffee machine. We arrived and were instantly asked if we would like a tea/coffee/cold drink…having just had breaky the tea girl and me declined the offer for the present time (my eyes nearly popped out of my head when tea girl declined a tea). We were directed to our station which was fitted out with a huge box of 24 un-iced vanilla cupcakes and an apron. The aprons were gorgeous and after putting ours on we were ready to go.
Kustom Cupcakes is run by the lovely Kylie and Nigel. Nigel guided us through the first phase where we learnt the classic vanilla and the classic chocolate cupcake recipes via a hands on class. Next up we were shown the classic vanilla buttercream. It was at the classic vanilla buttercream stage that miss drinks-tea-like-most-drink-water and I took centre stage to be the demo girls, unfortunately drinks-tea was scraping down the buttercream with a little too much zest and broke the spatula! Hilarious…Nigel just laughed and we continued on. The recipe for cookie dough followed…Yum Im thinking this is dangerous to know as there have been many a times when I have felt like cookie dough in my ice cream but havent bothered as I didn’t have the know how..well now I do. Oh dear.
A switch in our instructor and Kylie taught us piping skills and adding flavourings and colourings to the buttercream. Then…it was over to us, we had 24 un-iced cupcakes to deal with. Kustom Cupcakes provided us with cookie dough filling, caramel filling and jam filling….and made us whatever flavoured and coloured buttercream we requested. We were also given free reign with the toppings to the cupcakes (i.e. snickers, marshmallows, cherries). I thought this addition of letting us pretty much request whatever was above and beyond….and I couldn’t believe that we were given 24 cupcakes to take home full of filling and topped with buttercream.
To top off such a wonderful morning I grabbed a soy flat white on my way out (included in the cost of the workshop)…which was perfect. All in all I was impressed with the generosity of this cooking class – I have been to ones before where I haven’t been allowed to take home any of the goodies, so it really was a nice surprise to walk away with 24 cupcakes and a coffee! Plus I got lots of great little tips along the way…for example how to get all that buttercream off the whisk attachment easily! Great tip! The speed-eater-bf thoroughly enjoyed some (four!) of these for afternoon tea. My favourite.. the vanilla cupcake with caramel filling (wow it was so rich and decadent) and vanilla buttercream. I would not hesitate in recommending this cupcake class.
